Underlight: Shades of Truth FAQ
- Q: What was Underlight?
A: Little more than a decade ago, Underlight debuted on mplayer.com. It's selling point was that the entire game was basically player driven; there were NPC monsters (called nightmares) you could run around and fight, but the primary venue of advancement was through the socialization and rolyplaying with other people. Staying in character was strictly enforced, and even today, with the original graphics engine, it was unique among the internet.
- Q: If it was so great, what happened to it?
A: Underlight lived a long, productive life, and Lyra, the company that brainstormed it, simply had to let it go. Underlight had, and still has a very loyal playerbase, but the very fact that it was so specific in it's detail meant that it would never have thousands of followers. We assume that Lyra had to decide between spending too much time with Underlight, and placing their own life first and foremost.
- Q: So what's different?
A: To start off with, we've nearly finished recoding the server from the ground up. The original server was developed on a VERY specific operating system with VERY specific needs, and we've found that, ten years after its introduction, the current server setup is a nightmare in itself (no pun intended). In the near future, we'll be implementing some features and bug fixes that never made their way into the game, among other things.
- Q: Are you going to have any sort of public beta or test?
A: We haven't decided yet, but we haven't discarded the possibility of allowing something along these lines.
- Q: How much will it cost?
A: At this time we have no plans on charging any sort of initial setup, nor a monthly fee. However, since we have lives of our own, we are paying for everything out of our pockets. As such, at a later time, we may accept donations to help cover the cost of bandwidth.
